I’m currently working in a skilled nursing facility in Hawaii. I have worked in skilled nursing facilities (almost exclusively in Hawaii) for 6 years and I have just taken a job in an acute inpatient setting in a hospital (also in Hawaii). While I was working at a skilled nursing facility I also worked part time in an outpatient clinic and did some home health. You’ll find a lot of PT’s move from one setting to another (a nice feature about PT). The settings are all different and you get to experience a good snapshot of each during your affiliations (clinicals). The interesting thing I have experienced is that within a single setting there is a lot of variance. I began treating in skilled nursing facilities at the end of 2008 where all documentation was manual and you could group-treat patient’s up to 4 at a time while our productivity was expected to be about 75%. MDS 3.0 came about and regulations changed completely. All my documentation (within the same company) is now computerized, patient care is always one to one and productivity expectations rose significantly. So while you expect to see job changes when switching settings, also expect to see job changes within any given setting. I was hired by my first job in a skilled nursing facility following a phone interview after speaking with the regional manager and the two managers of the building. A few of my classmates interviewed for residencies and were successful and then were able to pretty easily find jobs after that. I haven’t heard of a PT struggling to find a job (which is a good sign).

Did an internship help you get your job?

Would you advise someone to pursue this major?

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

I believe attitude is key for both students and practitioners. Having a good science background and the ability to retain lots of facts about the human body will help you through your coursework. Having a good attitude though will help you get through some of the tougher courses (not necessarily harder, some courses may feel longer or not interest some students). Because we provide patient care directly having a good attitude is pivotal in providing effective care. If you can establish a solid professional rapport with a patient, you have a much better chance of improving that patient’s outcomes.I noticed that a lot of students transferred into our major once they realized that PT fit what they wanted to do better than athletic training did. A lot of students transferred out because it was difficult for them and/or they decided that PT wasn’t for them. If you take your time choosing your career and decide a physical therapist is what you want to become, this shouldn’t be an issue.

OT is a very rewarding career but restrictions from insurance are getting stricter, making it more difficult to provide services. Working in a skilled nursing setting requires a lot of patience and organization. Another beneficial aspect of having an OT degree is that you can work in several different fields (pediatrics, acute care hospitals, sub acute care, skilled nursing, home health, etc.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

For a degree in global health or public health, a more advanced degree may be necessary, as the major superficially covers many topics instead of providing deeper technical skills. Most students pursue medical school, masters in public health, or other health-related fields. Some find work at nonprofits but it can be tough to find these positions. I find I have a unique perspective in law school.

Things to know: 1) Classes that teach you how to manage people will be the most valuable. 2) Knowledge in construction methods is valuable but you learn more about "actual" building in the first 6 months of your career than in college. 3) If you want to work on construction sites as a project manager, you may have to move a lot based on project location. Living in big cities may reduce that.

Before I graduated I was hired by a state marine lab in Louisiana. I researched labs that were currently conducting research on the oil spill that occurred in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico and completed the application before graduation. While I learned a lot in the lab, I had the inspiration to do something that would allow me to tie my passion for conservation, integrate my indigenous background and protect our oceans and our wildlife. After saving money from my previous job, I took the initiative to establish my non-profits and fulfill my dreams of traveling while making a difference to those who have a similar background, customs and traditions as my family. So my jobs were acquired through intensive search and entrepreneurship skills gained during high school at a business focused program I completed at UCLA.

What are you currently doing?

I co-founded Jaws & Paws and founded Kaknab after leaving my job at a marine state lab. Jaws & Paws and Kaknab are two non-profits dedicated to conservation, education and research. Jaws & Paws focuses on protecting endangered species worldwide and Kaknab focuses on implementing community-based solutions that will protect the ocean and the cultures it sustains.

I think my PPL major is fairly useless since the major didn't go in depth enough into philosophy, politics or law. However, I did enjoy each of my classes a lot. I would advise students to take the classes I was required to take as electives but take up a more practical major.

Anything to add about your field of study?

I studied typical general economics. My senior honor's thesis was on how state taxes impact business creation. Economics is good training even if you don't want an economics related job. Many companies look for economic majors because students develop strong analytic skills that are valued by a wide variety of professions and disciplines. Many students go onto business or consulting. The major also feeds grads into a wide variety of grad programs, including law.

Are you working?

Yes

How did you get your job?

I saw the job online, but my internships helped make me a strong candidate. Looking for jobs should be a prime activity when you are a senior. You need to apply to many and even if you think you are close to having one, keep looking. Nothing is final until you have an offer letter in hand!

What are you currently doing?

I work at a leading think tank as an researcher. I work on projects for the military, mostly on strategic planning or optimization. One of my projects is for Special Forces and I travel to visit them. I have autonomy in my job and atmosphere is fairly relaxed. I do have security clearance.

Did an internship help you get your job?

Yes

Tell us about your internship.

I had a number of internships, but my last one was with the Homeland Security Research Institute. I worked on a number of projects including reviewing a model for the TSA on airport security. I didn't have a car when I was at my internship and that made transportation difficult. If I had been in a city it would have been less isolating.

Would you advise someone to pursue this major?

Yes

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

Internships are important. I know it is hard to focus on applying for internships when you are busy with school work, but it is essential. Econ majors are popular with companies, but you need to start looking in the fall. Don't put it off and devote time to it.

How did you get your job?

In general, I acquired a job through persistence. I was somewhat underemployed for almost a year after graduation. Companies receive so many applications each day that the only way to get attention is to play the odds and apply to as many jobs that interest you as possible. Online applications, career fairs, and personal references were my focus. More specifically, I applied to my current job on IBM's website. I didn't receive a response for a couple months then had a preliminary interview over the phone. After that, IBM flew me to the site and I had a series of formal interviews. In the end, I got the interview because of my resume but I think I got the job simply because they liked me.

What are you currently doing?

I just started a job with IBM in upstate NY. I am a manufacturing engineer and help oversee a portion of IBM's computer chip fabrication. I spend most of my time working in teams, trying to make various processes more efficient and solving any unexpected problems that arise.

Would you advise someone to pursue this major?

Yes

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

You must be completely self motivated. More than any other field of study you must seek your own opportunities. Art is NOT a clear path to a career, even in art education. This is not a field or area of study that you leave in the classroom, not 9 to 5. You must be working ceaselessly: attending shows, doing research, networking, evolving your studio practice, all in addition to finding a means of financial support. Seriously weigh the amount of debt you are taking on in attaining your education and what this will mean for you after given that your degree will offer you no greater job prospects than before. By borrowing too much money for school you may be crippling your artistic practice after school.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

Although it may sound obvious, I would advice someone to be very clear about what specific aspects of psychology they are interested in. For example, most psychology looks at the human mind and its functions and how those impact behavior. I was more interested in the humanistic/social psychology sides which looked at the importance of relationships and environment on behaviors. I would advice someone to pursue psychology as a major if they could be interested in marketing, researching, counseling or clinical work, because those seem to be the main career paths of a psych major. It is always a good idea to find a professor or professional who is doing work that interests you and learn about their journey as a possible model for your own.

Anything to add about your field of study?

I did not study insurance in college but my finance major allowed me to pursue a wide variety of jobs. The fundamentals I learned with finance can be used to excel in many other industries.

Are you working?

Yes

How did you get your job?

I interned for Marsh when I was a junior at Santa Clara. I applied through the Santa Clara Career Center website, had an on campus interview and then was invited to Marsh's office in San Francisco for final round interviews. November of my senior year, I was offered a full time position with Marsh after I graduated.

What are you currently doing?

I work for an insurance brokerage firm called Marsh & Mclennan. I am in a 2 year rotational training program for new college graduates. As a brokerage firm, we have client facing teams which provide service and face to face contact for the client. We also have teams that work directly with the insurance companies marketing and negotiating our clients insurance programs. In this program, the TRAC program, we spend one year on the client facing side and one year on the market facing side. This allows us to see how teams work with clients as well as provide the best programs for our clients.

Did an internship help you get your job?

Yes

Tell us about your internship.

As an intern for Marsh, I worked in the Casualty Placement group which markets and negotiates our clients insurance programs with numerous insurance companies to ensure we are receiving the best prices and coverage. I assisted my manager in working directly with underwriters to ensure we were getting the best coverage terms and prices for our clients programs. As part of the intern program, I also participated in weekly conference calls with interns from the rest of the country in which a senior leader in the firm spoke to us about their career and experience with Marsh. In addition to the conference calls, our intern class was also responsible for researching and putting together a group project. This project taught us how to coordinate with a group who isn't in your physical office as well as how to present a project to a large group over speaker phone/video conference.

Would you advise someone to pursue this major?

Yes

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

Be open to careers that do not necessarily fall into the Investment Banking/Analyst positions. Finance is a very versatile major and there are endless opportunities in any industry for people who have a background in Finance.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

If you want to go to a college outside of the US, get in touch with the schools you're interested in to see what kind of tests and grades they'll accept. When I spoke with the program director at the University of Liverpool they hadn't had too many students from the US (although they get a lot of international students from other parts of the world) so we agreed that if I got certain scores on a number of AP tests they would let me in (in addition to the standard personal essay and GPA requirements). I think going to college in a different country is a great opportunity to live outside the US for awhile because you have a built-in support system. It's a lot easier to settle in to a new place when most of the other students are new to the city as well.

Anything to add about your field of study?

December 2013 I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science (Games and Simulation concentration) and Applied Math, as well as a Master's in Engineering Sciences with an emphasis in Computer Science. I was a part of a blended program where I was considered an undergraduate taking graduate courses until completing all degree requirements, at which time I received both undergraduate and advanced degrees concurrently. Before college, I wanted to become a high school Math teacher. After reviewing the list of possible majors, I chose Computer Science because it involved computers and math (my two favorite things). I was not disappointed in my choice, and I was able to double major with Applied Math so that I could still be a Math teacher if I want at some point in my life.

Are you working?

Yes

How did you get your job?

I am a part of a scholarship with the federal government called the SMART Scholarship. This scholarship pays for tuition, books, health insurance, as well as provides a significant monthly stipend for the student. While attending school, the student must work paid summer internships. Once the student graduates, they are required to work for the federal government for the same amount of time that the scholarship paid for their school. In my case, I applied and received the scholarship halfway through my college career, so they paid for 2.5 years of college, and I am required to work at the Naval Research base for 2.5 years. In a nutshell, this scholarship pays for school completely, gives the students paid internships in the summer, and guarantees them a career once they graduate.

What are you currently doing?

I work for the U.S. federal government as a computer programmer at a Naval Research base that specializes in Air Warfare.

Did an internship help you get your job?

Yes

Tell us about your internship.

The internships with the SMART scholarship program were between 8-12 weeks. The student completes these internships at the base they will be working at once they graduate. These internships will always require the student to use skills related to their major, so as to give them real work experience before they begin their career at their destination after graduation.

Would you advise someone to pursue this major?

Yes

What advice do you have for someone thinking about this major?

Computer Science can be challenging, and programming does not make sense to everyone. However, I think everyone should attempt to learn programming, even those not majoring in Computer Science. The people that find programming fun and interesting should pursue it as a major and a career.
