Other advice for students?

I actually switched majors several times, and I'm currently only a junior. Unless you're interested in a very intense field like nursing or engineering, I would advise you to not to declare a major right away and take a variety of classes, even in subjects you may not have been too fond of in high school. My only regret in college is that I didn't take the time to get to know myself or the various academic fields, and I jumped from major to major hoping I would like it.

Anything to add about your field of study?

I am also an Africana Studies (Black Studies/African Diasporic Studies) major. Most of my undergraduate work blends Sociology and Africana Studies, especially in regards to my research foci and /or analytical approaches/methodology. The biggest misconception I believe students have about a Sociology major is that it has no practical value; is too broad or is no different than Psychology. Sociology has very real and measurable impacts on society in terms of policy, research and social movements and reform. It can be widely broad in perspective at times but can also be incredibly focused, hence macro and micro-sociology. It also relies on similar themes explored in Psychology but it is distinct in its own right. Sociology appeals to people who genuinely care about how people are shaped by the world they inhabit and how that world creates different experiences for individuals. For people passionate about micro and micro interactions with institutions, power and location Sociology is a perfect department to major in.

What type of career do you want to pursue after graduation?

When I graduate I want to go to graduate school and get my PhD in Sociology. After that I want to be a professor at a liberal arts college for a while before going into federal education policy research and then being a full-time scholar/academic who write articles on education, race and radical ways to make education for people of color better.

Have you had an internship?

Yes

My internships have been in Urban Education. I worked In College Development for a college-tracking program in Chicago that helps African American youth gain access to selective colleges. Additionally, I interned in the College Counseling department of a charter high school in New Orleans, LA.

Are you planning to go to graduate school or professional school?

What field or degree do you want to pursue in graduate school?

PhD in Sociology

Would you advise someone to pursue this major?

Yes

Do you have advice for someone thinking about this major?

If you care about understanding why the world is how it is and what factors influence it, Sociology is a great place to start. It is also a discipline that blends together so many other social sciences so it is a constant learning experience.

If you did it over, would you pick this major?

Yes

Other advice for students?

Take different kinds of courses: branch out but also pay attention to that one course that you just can't get enough of. More times than not, that might be the department for you and you should be open to investigation that further!

As the major is interdisciplinary, you take classes in various topics (such as environmental policy, economics, or sustainability) and in each class you review how that field relates to climate change, air quality, water quality, biodiversity, etc. and you learn about a bunch of interesting things. However, a smaller portion of the classes focus on water quality, which was my specific interest. If you're more interested in topics such as climate change, sustainability, or marine preservation, though, definitely go for it! My department had amazing opportunities for me to use a center on Catalina Island, learn to scientific scuba dive in Guam and Palau, and study civilization sustainability in Belize. Being an environmental studies major means you get to travel, spend time outdoors, and do really amazing things! Most people in the major are really chill and love the outdoors. Plus the department is relatively small so you really get to make strong connections with your professors.

If you did it over, would you pick this major?

Yes

Other advice for students?

Look into the course offerings the schools have that you're considering or the school that you're already attending. For general courses, get the syllabi to see how the course is broken up. As it's a broad major, it's good to see how much time will be spent covering the topics you most want to learn about. But if you're interested in the topic as a whole, it's a great chance to learn about it all and then be able to pick after

This major is challenging and rewarding. It is not at all like the math you learned in high school, which is mechanical and dull. This is about ideas and abstractions, not about plugging into formulas and crunching numbers. Memorization will do you no good here. Develop your powers of deduction and you will succeed. Try to memorize rather than understand, and you will definitely fail. Overall, this type of math is beautiful and addictive; but your tangible reward will be an aptitude for higher thinking that is a rare treasure in today's world. People will tell you that math is a dead end, but that's ok, because they have no idea what they are talking about. They don't even know what math is. In their minds, math is about numbers, because they've done very little math. Math is not numbers, math is about logic and intuition.

If you did it over, would you pick this major?

Other advice for students?

Pick a major that interests you and that you are good at, because you will succeed and your career will thrive. Do not pick something just because you think it will make you a lot of money, because you will hate it and you will fail.
